Eira Free Crochet Hat Pattern Toddler, Child, Adult Sizes

If you liked the stitch used for the Eira Messy Bun Beanie, I have used that stitch again for this free crochet hat pattern. This time the hat is worked from the top down and finished with an easy brim in single crochet in back loop only. As much as I love the look of starting with crocheted ribbing, working a hat top down has got to be my favorite way to make a hat. It is so fast and easy!

I used several different yarns for this pattern, but you can use any worsted weight yarn you would like.

Stitches and Abbreviations:

  • This pattern is written using US crochet terms.
  • chain (ch)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • double crochet (dc)
  • single crochet in back loop only (scblo)
  • stitch (st)
  • skip (sk)
  • slip stitch (slip st)
  • right side (RS)

Size and Gauge:

Notes on Sizing: This hat is designed to fit slightly slouchy.

You can easily modify the length of the hat by adding or omitting rounds in the main body of the hat. You can also modify the length of the brim.

The single crochet in back loop only brim will snug the base of the hat slightly. If you finish the main body of the hat and find that the hat will still be too loose, you can go down in hook size for the brim.

The sizes are based on the following head circumferences:

Head Circumferences:

  • Toddler: 17-19 inches head circumference
  • Child: 19-21 inches
  • Adult: 22-24 inches

Gauge for reference: 18 stitches x 14 rounds = 4 inches in suzette stitch variation with I hook.

Notes:

  • ch 1 and ch 2 turning chain does NOT count as a stitch.
  • Note on ch1 at beginning of crown rounds: For the crown rounds, which are all double crochet, I used a ch1 to begin the round so that there is less of a hole when you join at the end of the round. If you find this to be too tight, you can use a ch2 to begin these rounds instead. This ch2 would also NOT count as a st.
  • The crown (double crochet) is worked in regular rounds joined with a slip stitch. The body of the hat is worked in turned rounds, which means that you will join with a slip stitch at the end of each round but then turn your work, so you will be working on the “wrong side” of the beanie for Round 2 in the body, the right side for Round 3, and so on. After the body of the hat is worked, you will work rounds of single crochet in the back loop only, which is worked in regular rounds joined with a slip stitch.
