Easy granny stitch variation crochet baby blanket pattern, written and charted

The crochet Peach Blossom Baby Blanket is a super easy and beginner-friendly worsted weight pattern with a 2-row repeat using the regular granny stitch and a solid double crochet row. This is a great pattern if you are just starting out or if you want a mindless project for watching shows and relaxing. Both written and charted instructions are included, and a stitch and row count chart is provided if you want to change the size.

The pattern is available for free in its entirety below. You can also purchase an inexpensive, ad-free pdf in my Etsy shop here if you would like. The written portion of the pattern is in black and white for easy printing.

Materials:

  • Yarn: Any #4 heavy worsted weight/aran weight yarn
    • Examples: Premier Basix, Premier Just Yarn, Loops and Threads Impeccable, Big Twist, Red Heart Super Saver, Yarnsmiths Create Aran.
    • You can also use any worsted weight yarn that might be lighter (example: Caron Simply Soft) or really any yarn you want, although you will need to adjust your hook size and yardage.
  • Yardage: Total: 1750 yards/1600 meters: 1400 yards/1280 meters for the body of the blanket; less than 350 yards/320 meters for Round 2 of the border.
    • This works out to app. 4 skeins of 7oz of yarn for the body and 1 skein for the border. Total 5 skeins if you are using one color.
    • This amount includes some leeway–nobody wants to play yarn chicken! 🙂
  • Hook: I (5.5 mm)
  • Locking stitch marker, scissors, yarn needle

Size and Gauge:

  • 41 inch x 41 inch square with border (See “Changing the Size” below the pattern for modification.)
  • Gauge is not important for this pattern.
  • Gauge for reference: 12 st x 7 rows = 4 inches

Notes:

  • ch 1 and ch 2 turning chain does NOT count as a stitch.
  • Use a locking stitch marker to denote the RS of the work. This will make it easier when you get to the border.
  • The body of the blanket is worked in rows, and the border is worked in rounds. The border is optional.
  • The first round of the border (sc) is in the same color as the body of the blanket. The second round (dc) is in a contrasting color (optional).
  • Notes on size modification and crochet chart are included below written pattern.

Pattern:

Set-up Row 1 (RS): fdc 119, turn. Place st marker in this row to note RS of work.

Set-up Row 2 (WS): ch2, dc1 in same st, sk1, *3dc in next st, sk2*, repeat ** across row until 3 st left, 3dc, sk1, dc1 in final st, turn. (39 3dc clusters, 2 dc)

R3 (RS): ch2, dc1 in same st and every st across, turn. (119 dc)

R4 (WS): ch2, dc1 in same st, sk1, *3dc in next st, sk2*, repeat ** across row until 3 st left, 3dc, sk1, dc1 in final st, turn. (39 3dc clusters, 2 dc)

R5-R69: Repeat Rows 3-4 32 more times. Then, work R3 (the RS row) one more time for a total of 69 rows. Do not fasten off. Do not turn, but angle work so that you are now working down the side of the blanket. [Or, make blanket as long as desired, ending on the RS. The border will add 1.5 inches to both width and height.]

Border:

Border Round 1 (RS): Side 1: ch1, sc1 in the side of the top of the same st (last dc of R69), sc1 through the loops of the post of that same dc.

Continue working sc evenly across this side of the work. You will work two (2) sc for every 1 row of pattern. When you get to a row that starts with a ch2, you will work one sc into the top of the first dc of that row and another in the ch2 space. When you get to a row that starts with a dc, you will work one sc into the top of that dc and another through the side loops of the dc. (This is not an exact science, and you can add or remove sc as you need for your work to lay flat.)

The purple marker denotes the first sc of Border Round 1.

Continue across until you get to the fdc row. sc1 in the top of the last fdc, sc1 through the loops of the post of the last fdc, ch2 (corner).

Bottom (fdc) Row: Continue working sc1 into the base of each fdc across, ending with sc1 in the base of the first fdc, ch2 (corner). Do not turn.

Side 2: sc1 in ch2 space from fdc row, sc1 in the top of first fdc. Continue working across as you did for Side 1, ending with sc1 in the side of the top of the first dc of R69, ch2 (corner). Do not turn.

Top Row: sc1 in same st. sc1 in each st across, ending with sc1 in last dc from R69. ch2, slip st to first sc from round, changing to contrast color if desired. Do not turn.

Border Round 2 (RS): ch2, 2dc in ch2 space (you will be working in the ch2 space “behind” the ch2 turning ch), *dc1 in each st until the next ch2 corner space, [2dc, ch1, 2dc] in ch2 space*, rpt around blanket. When you get to the final corner, you will 2dc, ch1, slip st to the first dc to join. Fasten off and weave in ends. Happy Crocheting! Lena

Changing the Size:

  • The blanket size can easily be modified by following the pattern multiple.
  • Pattern Multiple: a multiple of 3 plus 2 stitches.
  • You can make the blanket as long as you like as long as you end on the RS row (odd) of the pattern.
  • The border as written will add roughly 1.5 inches to both the width and the height.
  • The following chart shows the fdc and row count for different sizes if you are using #4 weight yarn and an I (5.5 mm) hook. (If your gauge is different from mine, the size will not be exact.)

Chart:

Please note that for clarity, not all of the stitches for Border Rounds 1 and 2 are included.
